Homework
Print and bring "How Hip Hop Holds Blacks Back" to class. (NOTE: This essay, written by one of the world's foremost scholars on the evolution of the English language, contains some EXTREMELY explicit language that appear within lyrics of the songs the author references to argue his thesis. Parents are encouraged to preview this piece that does appear on our reading list for the ACT Quality Core Standards, the basis for the students' End-of-Course Assessment. If you are more comfortable, students may read an alternate assigment, "The Case for Torture." Click on the title for that essay to be directed to the piece. While it is not quite as comprehensive, students can still get an idea of claim, counterargument, and concession.)
